I can't believe how busy I've been. Christmas is over, and yet I run around nonstop. It's a good problem, I guess. I'm not sure if you've noticed that I'm shooting a lot of 4x5 black and white. Well, I've got an excellent reason. First, it's fun. Second, I'm getting ready to teach a darkroom class and I'm honing my skills; not very well I might add. Third, I like it. As of right now, I have zero attendees. I'm ok with that, for now. I actually forgot the date and made plans for the same night, so it could be really weird.

Over the break I was feeling a little bit creative, so I decided to make a short movie. Alison was kind enough to go along with it. It appeared as though she had fun, but I'm not really sure. It was written in two hours the night before. Alison didn't see the script until the car ride, and yet we still were able to pull it off in about 2 hours of filming. Although it was a good adventure, we both learned a valuable lesson; if you break into the parking garage of the county services building, don't lie to the maintenance man about how you got in. It will hurt his feelings.

This is old news now, but it’s worth discussing... I suppose. A month or two ago I went to The Drums concert down in LA. It was great fun and kind of spontaneous. I say “kind of spontaneous” because I bought tickets months in advance, but I forgot about them. Myron and Maggie needed a ride back from LAX and I agreed to pick them up. The morning of, my phone’s calendar reminded me of the concert. Thanks, phone. I left work early, which means late, and I got there just in time. After picking up Myron and Maggie, we went to Tommy’s. Perfect night. The pictures were taken on a Leica M2 and I guess all the exposures. Straight Bresson style.

Stanley & Sons: My Apron

I watched this video and I thought about how much I love my apron I ordered from Stanley & Son's. My reasoning was to use it in the darkroom and when I'm working on cameras, but really I just wanted a cool apron. I had him put a pocket for a small moleskin notebook, a few mechanical pencils, and a leather flap on the iPhone pocket to protect from light leaks. The toughest part about the order was that I had to wait 12 weeks (or so) to get it, but it was definitely worth it.

Last Friday there was a YSA rafting trip. I forgot to bring a "real" camera so I picked up a disposable from the warehouse. Seeing as the river is dangerously high and I'm the seasoned adventurer that I am, I decided to leave the safety of the boat and swim the torrent alone; besides, it would make for more interesting pictures. However, what I did not foresee was the incompetence of one of the new guides who thought it to be a good idea to run over a swimmer in the middle of a class three rapid. Unfortunately I was more focused on not drowning and I didn't see the event as a photo opportunity so there are no pictures to document the occasion. I really like how everything else turned out. All and all a good day on the river.

River's End Rafting 2011

Here's my photo essay of a day at River's End Rafting... It's not really a photo essay, but it would be really cool if it was. I love rafting. I look forward to the days when I get to guide. Unfortunately they're few and far between due to my Henley's schedule. At normal work we were testing the film dryers so I had to shoot a couple of low ISO test rolls for purely scientific purposes (haha!). I dusted off my Rolleiflex and loaded a roll of Rollei PAN 25 (square pictures) and it loaded Ilford PANF 50 in the Nikon F100 (rectangle pictures). I like how they turned out. I'm glad I was able to shoot a little bit of the take out process, seeing as it's rarely documented.

We sell a product called the GoPro Hero. It's basically a little indestructible video camera with a wide angle lens. Dave was doing a demo for the first Friday (all the downtown businesses stay open late) so I was nice enough to make a little demo video for him. It took me 15 minutes to film this and about an hour to edit. Vincent Laforet did a really cool post on GoPros here.

I helped Mike shoot ANTM again this year. It was a lot of fun. Larissa actually accompanied me as my "assistant". I've never seen the show, but I absolutely love all the contestants. I hear the craziest answers to the interview questions and we even had a girl fall over in her stripper boots. This years best quotes:

"The crazy thing I've done is probably driving here from LA. I drove for four hours through the desert and there were coyotes chasing me. (yep yep!)"

"uhhh... the craziest thing I've ever done..? That would have to be... the time I ran done Hollywood Blvd.."

"uhhh... I never do anything crazy because my dad is preacher and he would thump my head."

"I went to a gay bar and met a person and I knew that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with that person and then ten days later I married that person in a native american ceremony and then shortly after they got sent to prison and I'm still waiting for that person to get out of prison. I think that's the craziest thing that's ever happened to me."

Larissa and I agreed on all of our favorites, we even nicknamed them. Our favorites are Pixie, Lake Isabella, Cindy's, Braces, Long Boarder, 101, and 102. The last two showed up after everything was over due to long trips with bad directions (101 accidentally went to San Diego). We didn't have the heart to turn them away, so we set everything back up, but as punishment I made them pose for a picture.

Eyes Lips Eyes just released their new music video. They asked me if I wanted to work with them and I said "Heck yes!" Little did I know that the next day I would be wearing these beauties (referring to the yellow shorts). It was fun to film and I'm glad my roller skating skills are in tip-top shape. I shot half a roll of film; I'll share those when I get around to developing them.

We got new film in the shop today. It's Rollei PAN 25. I shot a test roll for fun on my lunch break. It was fun. I went to the art museum, but I couldn't take any photos inside. I tried out an Argus-II rangefinder and I failed; mostly. This little art-deco camera is absolutely beautiful. I love how simple it is, however I feel it may be a little too simple. What I mean by that is there’s only two positions to focus it; lens in and lens out. The only problem with that is that there is no telling how to guess distance. Simple enough, using all the reasoning power in this little head of mine I figured it out... as you can se by the photos, I guessed wrong. When all is said and done, I still like the photos.

Kodak Six-20 Flash Brownie

The Kodak Six-20 Flash Brownie is one cool camera. It has one shutter speed; around 1/40th. And it has one aperture; around f4-f8. The only variable is the speed of the film used. It uses 620 film which is no longer manufactured, so I transferred a roll of Ektar 100 120 onto the 620 spools in the darkroom and it worked like a charm (here's a link for the step by step). I walked around this afternoon and got a few shots downtown. I must thank Brian from Classic Camera for the helpful tips with this camera (and countless others). If you like old cameras as much as I do, a visit to his store is a must.

I found these old photos of train wrecks in my garage. My father was in the wreck from the first and second photo. He said he was side swiped by another train and when they derailed the track punctured the cab and impaled his seat, missing him by a few inches. The third photo is from a wreck in Indio.

People are always asking me, “Jimmy if you were going to spend all night wondering around downtown shooting portraits of people on the street, what is something you shouldn’t do with your film?”

“Easy” I say, “Don’t go into the darkroom and misplace your negatives and then turn on the light with them still on the counter. It will ruin them.”

Nicca Type III

This is an old Leica knockoff, but in the 40's the knockoff's were built well. It's really complicated to use, but at least it's cute. As a cool side note, when I opened it up I found a used roll of Kodachrome. I plan on sending it off to see what treasures are on it.

Olympus Trip 35

Here's one of the cool cameras that will likely end up in our affordable old camera rental program. The test roll is Kodak Ultramax 200. The Olympus Trip 35 is a really simple camera; 4 focus settings, 25-400 ISO, 2.8-22f stops, but what really sets it apart is the solar cells that select the shutter speed automatically. This camera is sweet!

Over the weekend, my friends and I went camping. It was fun. I read a book about chemicals, hiked for 1/4 mile, shot 3 rolls of film, and chopped up a tree with an axe (the tree was already dead). It was a very productive weekend. I would post the black and white stuff, but the lab techs hate me and they won't develop my film; actually I was the only person that turned in B&W on Monday so we couldn't justify turning on the machine for little ol' me. Speaking of film, these beauties are all 120 Kodak Ektar 100. You should definitely buy some.

Nick's Wall Art

On our last skating outing, we decided to take some photos for Nick Barry's wall. He recently moved into a new place. We shot some black and white too, but they won't go up until after they're developed (Henley's only does B&W on Monday's and Friday's). Seeing as I'm now trying to promote film, this is all 120 Kodak Portra 400NC. Come down and buy some, it's nice.

PS. I know the first picture is under exposed and really grainy, but I like it and it stays.

On Halloween, Melanie, Katlyn, Nick, and I drove to the Queen Mary in Long Beach to attend a show by Eyes Lips Eyes (formerly ER) and Toy Bombs (formerly Kid Theodore). There were a bunch of spooky sights to behold. It was fun. The highlight of the evening was when Melanie learned to use a manuel film camera. Her pictures start at #5. I think they turned out really cool. I can't wait to sell her tons of film.

I'm at Henley's now and I am so crazy busy; not that it's a bad thing. This camera store is shaping up rather nicely. The funny thing is that all the photo blogs that inspired me to make the change in career have been completely neglected because I'm far to busy to read any of them. I guess it's true what they say about the cobbler's kids never having any cobbler... or something like that.

Utah: Surprise Party plus Halo

I just got back from a Utah trip this last weekend. Here are a few of the highlights:

I walked down a long road

It wasn't as productive as most of my trips, but it was a good break... from an otherwise careless life. I brought multiple cameras, but I didn't use any of them. Here's the few brilliant grabs I got with my cell phone:

Rules for Photos via GQ

I usual never do this, but I had to share a few scans I stole from this month’s GQ. The 12 tips they shared are awesome! They’re super easy, yet really effective.

For example, “No. 1 Think of the camera as your visual diary. It’s your witness and memory. Shoot what you know and who you love.” Simple, but brilliant! I also love the idea of a photo-covered fridge. I don’t have my own refrigerator, so Peter is going to have to start this one for me.

Lamisil Contest

My dear friends Justin and Garrett love entering commercial contests. A while ago they were in town for a couple days so we could work on a contest for Lamisil. Check out the beauties we were able to turn out in a short amount of time!

My personal favorite is the one about foot fetishes. It was intended to be especially awkward. The final product isn't as awkward as I had hoped for, but getting a cute girl to let us cover her feet with food was kind of awkward. When my dad walked in on us while I was lying on the floor snapping pictures it got really awkward. I’m not sure what he thought was going on. He paused for a few seconds and said, “I hope that’s not my food you’re wasting” before moving on.

Henley's Photo Class

I’ve been taking the beginners photography class with my brother. It’s a surprisingly good class; I plan to attend many more (wink wink). Here’s a link to an interesting article about Henley’s… very interesting (wink wink). Here are a few shots I took for a class assignment. I used my medium format because it’s fun. I’m noticing a trend of only Melanie pictures on my blog. For this I blame you; if only you stayed out late at night skateboarding with me there would be more diversity on my blog… thanks a lot.
